If you search for photos of Blue Lagoon, it honestly looks unreal.

Bright turquoise water, white rocks, boats floating in crystal clear sea, people swimming under the summer sun — it almost looks tropical.

After visiting myself, I completely understand why this place became one of the most famous spots in Malta.

But at the same time, I also understand why some people leave feeling disappointed.

So… is Blue Lagoon Malta worth it or overrated?

My honest answer is:

both things are true at the same time.

The water really is beautiful.
But the crowds can absolutely change the experience depending on when you visit.

The Water At Blue Lagoon Really Is That Beautiful

I have seen many beaches and swimming spots around Europe, but the color of the water at Blue Lagoon Malta genuinely surprised me in real life too.

The sea around Comino Malta almost glows in the sunlight during summer.

Especially in the morning, the water feels incredibly clear and calm. It looked even better than some of the photos I had seen online.

This is definitely one of those places that actually looks similar to Pinterest and Instagram in real life.

If you enjoy:

• swimming,
• snorkeling,
• boat trips,
• photography,
• or classic European summer destinations,

then visiting Blue Lagoon Malta can absolutely be worth it.

But Yes… It Can Feel Extremely Overcrowded

This is the part many people do not fully expect.

During peak season — especially July and August — the area becomes very crowded surprisingly early.

By late morning, huge tourist boats begin arriving continuously and the atmosphere changes very quickly.

There are:

• loud boats,
• music,
• packed swimming areas,
• long food lines,
• crowded walkways,
• and very little free space near the main lagoon.

At some moments, it stopped feeling relaxing completely.

The scenery itself was stunning, but the amount of people changed the atmosphere a lot for me.

This is why some visitors later describe Blue Lagoon Malta as overrated.

Is Blue Lagoon Malta A Tourist Trap?

Honestly?

I would not call it a complete tourist trap.

The place itself really is beautiful.

The biggest issue is mostly the timing of your visit.

If you arrive during the busiest part of the day expecting a quiet hidden paradise, you will probably feel disappointed.

But if you:

• arrive early,
• avoid peak season,
• or spend more time exploring Comino Malta beyond the main lagoon,

the experience becomes much better.

That is why I think the answer to “is the Blue Lagoon Malta worth it” really depends on expectations.

Blue Lagoon Malta Things To Do

Many people think Blue Lagoon is simply a quick swimming stop, but there are actually several different things to do in Comino besides taking photos.

Swimming In The Lagoon

The shallow turquoise water makes this one of the best swimming spots in Malta during summer.

A lot of people simply spend hours floating in the warm sea and relaxing near the rocks.

Even though the main area gets crowded, the water itself really is beautiful.

Snorkeling Around Comino

One of my favorite parts of visiting Comino Malta was snorkeling.

The water is usually very clear, especially earlier in the day, and there are rocky underwater areas around the island that make snorkeling much more interesting than I expected.

If you are searching for Blue Lagoon Malta things to do, snorkeling is one of the best activities there.

The areas near Crystal Lagoon and the Santa Maria Caves actually felt even better for snorkeling because they were deeper, calmer, and less crowded.

Exploring Hidden Swimming Spots

One thing many people miss is that things to do in Comino are not limited only to the main Blue Lagoon section.

Some of my favorite moments happened after walking away from the busiest area.

There are smaller rocky swimming spots around the island where the atmosphere feels much quieter and calmer.

Even walking a little further can completely change the experience.

Boat Tours Around Comino

Boat tours are also one of the most popular Blue Lagoon Malta things to do during summer.

Even though most tourists simply swim or snorkel, the deeper water and rocky underwater landscape around Comino Malta make the island popular for divers as well.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Blue Lagoon Malta?

Timing changes everything here.

If possible, avoid arriving around midday during peak summer because this is when the largest tourist boats arrive.

The best experience is usually:

• early in the morning,
• later in the afternoon,
• or outside peak season completely.

Visiting during:

• late spring,
• early summer,
• or early autumn

can feel significantly more enjoyable than peak July and August.

If you arrive before the large tour boats, the atmosphere feels calmer, quieter, and the water often looks even more crystal clear.

Would I Personally Go Again?

Yes — honestly, I would.

But I would do it differently.

I would:

• arrive much earlier,
• spend more time exploring Comino Malta,
• focus more on snorkeling and hidden spots,
• and spend less time in the busiest central area.

Because despite the crowds, the scenery itself really is beautiful.

Final Thoughts — Is Blue Lagoon Malta Worth It Or Overrated?

I think Blue Lagoon Malta is one of those places that can feel either:

• magical,
• or completely overwhelming,

depending on your timing and expectations.

The turquoise water genuinely is stunning in real life.

But the crowds are also very real.

If you expect a hidden peaceful beach, you may leave disappointed.

But if you plan your day well, arrive early, and explore beyond the main lagoon, I do think Blue Lagoon Malta is worth visiting at least once.
