Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast for First-Time Visitors
Planning where to stay on the Amalfi Coast can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first visit.
When I started researching our trip, I kept finding completely different recommendations. Some guides suggested staying in Positano, while others recommended Amalfi, Sorrento, or Salerno. Since we wanted to experience the Amalfi Coast on a budget, travel without renting a car, and easily visit several towns in one trip, choosing the right base became one of the most important decisions.
After comparing accommodation prices, transportation options, and travel times, we decided to stay in Salerno for all five nights.
Salerno was easy to reach from Naples by train, accommodation was noticeably more affordable than in places like Positano or Capri, and it made exploring the Amalfi Coast by ferry incredibly simple. For our trip, it offered exactly the balance we were looking for: convenience, great transport connections, and better value for money.

Is the Amalfi Coast One Place?
Before planning my trip, I didn’t realize that the Amalfi Coast isn’t just one destination. Instead, it’s made up of several beautiful towns, each offering a completely different experience.
The most popular places to stay include Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Praiano, Maiori, and Minori. Although Sorrento isn’t technically part of the Amalfi Coast, it’s often included in travel itineraries because it’s well connected to Naples and serves as another popular base for exploring the area.
Since you’ll likely spend your trip visiting multiple towns rather than staying in just one, choosing the right base can make your vacation much easier.
Salerno: My Top Recommendation for First-Time Visitors
For our first Amalfi Coast trip, we wanted three things:
- A destination that fit our budget
- Easy access from Naples
- The ability to explore the Amalfi Coast without renting a car
After landing in Naples, we simply took a direct train to Salerno. From there, we explored Positano, Amalfi, and Capri almost entirely by ferry. Although buses are also available, we chose ferries every time because they were not only convenient but also one of the highlights of our trip. Seeing the colorful villages from the water was an experience in itself.
Compared to Positano or Capri, accommodation in Salerno is generally much more budget-friendly, making it an excellent choice if you’re planning the Amalfi Coast on a budget without sacrificing convenience.
Another reason I loved staying in Salerno is that it felt much less crowded than some of the famous coastal towns. After spending the day exploring busy places like Positano or Amalfi, it was nice to return to a more relaxed atmosphere in the evening while still having plenty of restaurants, cafés, and a beautiful waterfront promenade nearby.
Where to Stay in Salerno
One tip I found especially useful is choosing accommodation near the city center, between Salerno’s two main ferry terminals.
The two main ferry terminals are:
- Concordia Harbor, where many ferries depart for Positano and Amalfi.
- Molo Manfredi (Salerno Port), which serves ferry routes including Capri.
They’re around a 25 to 30-minute walk apart, so staying somewhere between the two ports makes it easy to reach either terminal on foot.
I found our accommodation on Booking.com, and there were plenty of hotels and apartments to choose from near the city centre.
Pros of Staying in Salerno
- More affordable hotels and apartments
- Easy train connection from Naples
- Excellent ferry connections to Positano, Amalfi, and Capri
- Great option if you don’t want to rent a car
- Less crowded than Positano or Amalfi
- Plenty of restaurants, cafés, and shops
Possible Downsides
The main downside is that Salerno doesn’t have the iconic cliffside scenery that people often associate with the Amalfi Coast. If waking up to postcard views of colorful houses built into the cliffs is your dream, Positano might be a better fit.
For me, however, the easier transportation and lower accommodation prices made Salerno the perfect choice for a first visit.
Positano: The Most Iconic Place to Stay
If you’ve ever seen photos of the Amalfi Coast on Instagram or Pinterest, there’s a good chance they were taken in Positano.
With its colorful cliffside buildings, luxury hotels, boutique shops, and incredible sea views, it’s easy to understand why it’s one of Italy’s most famous destinations.
We visited Positano during our trip but decided not to stay there.
The main reason was the cost. Compared to Salerno, accommodation prices were significantly higher, and since we wanted to visit several towns rather than spend our entire budget on a hotel, staying in Positano simply didn’t make sense for our first trip.
Another thing worth knowing is that Positano is built into the cliffs, which means you’ll be walking up and down a lot of stairs throughout the day. If you’re traveling with large suitcases or have limited mobility, that’s something to keep in mind.
That said, I completely understand why so many people choose to stay here. The atmosphere is unforgettable, and if I ever return to the Amalfi Coast for a special occasion, I’d happily book one or two nights in Positano.
Positano is best for:
- Luxury travelers
- Honeymoons and romantic trips
- Travelers who don’t mind paying more for iconic views
- Visitors looking for a once-in-a-lifetime stay
Amalfi: A Convenient Central Base
Although Positano often gets most of the attention, Amalfi is another excellent place to stay.
Because of its central location, it’s easy to continue exploring other towns along the coastline by ferry or bus.
Compared to Positano, Amalfi feels a little more compact and practical while still offering beautiful scenery, historic streets, restaurants, and waterfront cafés.
During the day, however, it can become very busy with day-trippers arriving by ferry and bus, especially during the summer months.
If you like being in the heart of the Amalfi Coast and don’t mind the crowds, Amalfi can be a fantastic base.
Amalfi is best for:
- Travelers who want a central location
- Visitors planning to explore multiple towns
- People who enjoy a lively atmosphere
Sorrento: A Popular Alternative
Sorrento is one of the most popular places to stay when visiting the region.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to include Sorrento in our itinerary, but I came across it countless times while planning our trip.
Many travelers choose Sorrento because accommodation can be more affordable than Positano, it’s very easy to reach from Naples, and there are regular ferries and buses connecting it to other destinations.
Personally, I still think Salerno suited our itinerary better because we planned to travel mainly by ferry and wanted easy train access from Naples.
However, Sorrento is definitely worth considering, especially if you’re planning to combine the Amalfi Coast with Pompeii, Naples, or Capri.
Sorrento is best for:
- First-time visitors
- Travelers arriving by train from Naples
- Visitors combining several destinations in one trip
Capri: Worth Staying Overnight?
Capri is one of the most beautiful places I visited during our trip.
With luxury boutiques, breathtaking viewpoints, elegant cafés, and crystal-clear water, it’s easy to see why the island has such an exclusive reputation.
For our first visit, we chose to spend one full day on Capri before returning to Salerno in the evening.
Personally, I think that’s a great option if it’s your first Amalfi Coast trip.
Capri deserves a full day, but unless you’re specifically looking for a luxury island escape, I don’t think staying overnight is essential for a first visit.
That said, I’d absolutely love to return one day and spend one or two nights there. Staying after the last ferries leave would be a completely different experience and would give me more time to explore quieter parts of the island.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should you stay in one town or move between hotels?
For a first trip, I’d recommend choosing one base and taking day trips from there. That’s exactly what we did, and it made the trip much more relaxed than constantly packing and changing hotels.
Is one night in Positano or Capri worth it?
If your budget allows, I think spending one or two nights in either Positano or Capri would be a wonderful experience. For our first visit, though, we preferred staying in Salerno and visiting both as day trips so we could see more of the Amalfi Coast.
How far in advance should you book accommodation on the Amalfi Coast?
If you’re visiting between late spring and early autumn, I’d recommend booking as early as possible. The most popular hotels, apartments, and budget-friendly options often sell out months in advance.
Do you need a car on the Amalfi Coast?
Not necessarily. We explored the Amalfi Coast entirely without a car by using trains and ferries, and I never felt like we were missing out. In fact, traveling by ferry became one of my favorite parts of the trip.

How many nights should you stay on the Amalfi Coast?
I think five days is a great amount of time for a first visit. It allowed us to visit Naples, Positano, Amalfi, and Capri without feeling too rushed while still leaving plenty to explore on a future trip.
