One Day in Capri, Italy: The Perfect First-Time Itinerary

Capri had been on my travel bucket list for years, and after finally visiting, I completely understand why it’s one of the most popular day trips from the Amalfi Coast.

During our five-day trip along the Amalfi Coast, we dedicated one full day to exploring Capri. Although one day isn’t enough to see absolutely everything, it was enough to experience the island’s most famous viewpoints, stroll through its elegant streets, take a boat tour around the coastline, enjoy authentic Italian pizza by the harbor, and even end the afternoon with a swim before catching the ferry back.

If you’re planning your first visit and wondering how to spend one day in Capri, this itinerary follows the exact route we took, including a few practical tips I wish I had known before arriving.

Arriving at Marina Grande

Our ferry from Salerno arrived at Marina Grande, Capri’s main harbor, where almost every visitor begins their day. Even early in the morning the harbor was already busy, with long lines forming for the funicular and groups gathering for guided tours.

One thing that wasn’t immediately obvious was where to buy funicular tickets. The ticket office isn’t located directly at the entrance to the queue, so don’t make the same mistake we almost did by joining the line first. Instead, walk over to the nearby ticket office, buy your ticket there, and then return to the funicular entrance.

Although the queue looked intimidating, it moved much faster than we expected, and within a few minutes we were already heading up toward Capri Town.

Ride the Capri Funicular

The short ride on the funicular only takes a few minutes (~ 5 min), but the views become more impressive with every second as the harbor slowly disappears below.

As soon as we stepped off, most people immediately followed the crowds into the town centre. Instead, we noticed a terrace near the funicular station and decided to explore it first.

It was one of my favourite discoveries of the day.

If you walk a little farther back from the main viewing area, you’ll find a much quieter spot with beautiful panoramic views that many visitors simply walk past. It became one of my favourite photo locations in Capri, and we had no people in the background in any of our photos.

Visit the Gardens of Augustus

Our next stop was the Gardens of Augustus, one of the places I was looking forward to the most before visiting Capri.

The walk from the Piazzetta takes only a few minutes, passing beautiful streets lined with flowers, cafés, and luxury hotels. Even the route there feels like part of the experience.

In my opinion, visiting the gardens during the morning is the best choice. The sunlight beautifully illuminates the coastline, making the sea appear an incredible shade of turquoise while the famous Faraglioni Rocks stand out perfectly in the distance. It was easily one of the most photogenic moments of our entire day on Capri.

Buying tickets was a little different than I expected. Right next to the entrance, there’s a self-service ticket machine where we purchased our tickets. We didn’t see a staffed ticket office, and at the time of our visit the machine accepted card payments only, so it’s worth having a bank card ready before you arrive.

You don’t need to plan too much time here. We spent around an hour walking through the gardens, stopping at the viewpoints, taking photos, and simply enjoying the scenery without feeling rushed.

Don’t Miss the View of Via Krupp

One of the highlights of the Gardens of Augustus is the spectacular view overlooking Via Krupp.

This famous zigzag pathway carved into the cliffs is one of Capri’s most iconic landmarks and one of the island’s most photographed viewpoints. Even if the road itself is temporarily closed during your visit, the panoramic view from above is absolutely worth seeing.

Standing there, you really get a sense of how dramatic Capri’s coastline is. Between the limestone cliffs, the bright blue sea, and the winding path below, it’s one of those views that looks just as impressive in real life as it does in photos.

Walk Through Capri’s Designer Shopping Streets

After leaving the Gardens of Augustus, we simply wandered through Capri Town without any particular plan.

Capri is famous for its elegant shopping streets, where luxury fashion boutiques sit alongside small cafés, local shops, and beautifully decorated buildings covered in colourful flowers. Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s worth slowing down and enjoying the atmosphere.

As we walked through the centre, we passed many of the world’s best-known designer stores, giving the town its glamorous reputation. At the same time, it never felt overwhelming, as there were plenty of charming side streets and quiet corners to explore away from the busiest areas.

One stop I definitely recommend is Buonocore Gelateria.

Before our trip, I had seen this place recommended several times, mainly because they make their waffle cones fresh throughout the day. Naturally, there was a queue when we arrived, but it moved quickly, and it was absolutely worth the short wait.

The freshly baked cone was just as good as everyone had described, and enjoying a gelato while walking through Capri’s beautiful streets felt like one of those simple travel moments you remember long after the trip ends.

Take a Boat Tour Around Capri

Instead of booking a boat tour weeks before our holiday, we decided to see what was available once we arrived back at Marina Grande.

It turned out to be much easier than we expected.

Several companies were offering different tours directly at the harbor, so we compared a few options and booked a one-hour boat trip around the island on the spot.

For me, this was one of the best decisions of the entire day.

Seeing Capri from the water gives you a completely different perspective. During the tour we sailed around both Capri and Anacapri, passed impressive sea caves, admired the dramatic cliffs, and got much closer to places that simply can’t be appreciated from land.

One of the highlights was stopping near the famous Faraglioni Rocks, where the captain slowed down for several minutes so everyone could take photos. Seeing these iconic rock formations from the sea was even more impressive than viewing them from the Gardens of Augustus earlier that day.

If you’re wondering whether a Capri boat tour is worth it, my answer is definitely yes. Even with only one day on the island, I wouldn’t skip it.

End Your Day at Marina Grande

After returning to the harbor, we were definitely ready for dinner.

We found a restaurant near Marina Grande where we enjoyed a classic Italian pizza before our evening ferry back to Salerno. After walking around Capri all day, it was the perfect way to slow down for a while.

One thing that pleasantly surprised me was discovering a small public beach right next to the harbor. Since we still had some time before our ferry departed, we changed into our swimsuits and went for a quick swim.

It was the perfect ending to our day.

After exploring viewpoints, walking through Capri Town, taking a boat tour, and enjoying dinner by the sea, relaxing in the crystal-clear water for a little while made the whole experience feel complete before heading back to Salerno.

Although we only spent one day in Capri, we managed to see many of the island’s most famous attractions without feeling like we had to rush from place to place.
