What to Wear on the Amalfi Coast: Outfit Ideas for Every Stop

what to wear on the amalfi coast

Planning outfits for the Amalfi Coast was honestly one of my favorite parts of preparing for the trip.

Italy has long been associated with timeless elegance and effortless style, and I felt that even more while visiting the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Before our trip, I actually planned different outfits for each destination because I wanted them to complement the beautiful surroundings while still being comfortable enough for full days of sightseeing.

Since we visited Positano, Amalfi, and Capri over five days in September, I quickly realized that finding the right balance between style and comfort is key. You’ll likely spend hours walking, climbing stairs, taking ferries, and exploring narrow streets, so your outfits need to look good without making your day uncomfortable.

In this ‘What to Wear on the Amalfi Coast’ guide, I’ll share exactly what I wore during my trip, along with outfit ideas, practical styling tips, and the pieces that worked best for each destination.

What Is the Dress Code on the Amalfi Coast?

One of the questions I see quite often is whether there’s a dress code on the Amalfi Coast.

The simple answer is no.

People wear everything from swimsuits and casual summer clothes to elegant dresses for dinner, so there isn’t an official dress code that you need to follow.

That said, I personally love dressing for the destination I’m visiting. For a place as beautiful as the Amalfi Coast, I wanted my outfits to reflect the elegant atmosphere while still feeling comfortable enough for long days of walking.

I would describe the overall style I aimed for as casual chic—simple, timeless outfits that feel polished without looking overdressed.

What to Wear on the Amalfi Coast

If I had to pack for the Amalfi Coast again, I would choose exactly the same type of wardrobe.

For me, the perfect outfits were lightweight dresses, linen pieces, matching two-piece sets, and comfortable yet elegant sandals. Breathable fabrics made a huge difference during warm September days, especially when walking around for hours or spending time on ferries.

Rather than packing lots of trendy pieces, I focused on timeless outfits that I knew would still look beautiful years later when looking back at my travel photos.

If you’re wondering what to wear on the Amalfi Coast, I’d recommend choosing clothes that are both photo-friendly and practical. After all, you’ll probably spend far more time exploring than sitting at your hotel.

What to Wear in Positano

Out of every destination on our itinerary, Positano was the place I planned the most outfits for.

Since every viewpoint has a completely different atmosphere, I wanted each outfit to suit the location.

For the famous ceramic terrace overlooking Positano, I wore a butter yellow linen dress. I felt the soft pastel yellow matched the lemon-themed ceramics and Mediterranean colors perfectly. It also looked beautiful in photos, making it the perfect outfit for capturing some of my favorite Instagram shots in Positano.

One little styling trick I always use with A-line dresses is adding a lightweight tulle underskirt underneath. It gives the skirt a little more volume, helps it hold its shape beautifully, and makes the dress look even better in photos without feeling uncomfortable.

I paired the dress with simple white flat sandals to keep the look elegant without sacrificing comfort.

Later that day, when visiting one of Positano’s beautiful panoramic restaurants, I went for a completely different style inspired by classic old-money fashion. I wore a black and white mini dress with a wide-brimmed white hat featuring a black ribbon, oversized black-and-white sunglasses, and either my white sandals or black ballet flats.

For the beach, I kept things simple by throwing a lightweight butter-yellow linen shirt over my swimsuit as a cover-up. It was comfortable, breathable, and matched the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere perfectly.

Personally, I think Positano is the perfect place to have fun with your outfits. Soft pastels, feminine dresses, linen fabrics, and elegant accessories all feel right at home here while still being practical for walking up and down the town’s famous staircases.

What to Wear in Amalfi

Compared to Positano, I felt Amalfi had a completely different atmosphere.

Its historic streets, charming piazzas, and warm Mediterranean-colored buildings inspired me to choose a softer, more romantic outfit.

For Amalfi, I wore a cream-colored puff-sleeve mini dress with a delicate floral print. Looking back at my photos, I honestly couldn’t have chosen a better outfit for the setting. The colors blended beautifully with the town’s architecture and created exactly the timeless look I had hoped for.

I also used one of my favorite styling tricks again by wearing a lightweight tulle underskirt underneath the dress. It gave the skirt more shape and movement while still looking natural.

To complete the outfit, I wore simple light-colored sandals and a pearl necklace.

One thing I especially loved about Amalfi is that floral prints and romantic dresses seem to fit perfectly with the town’s elegant atmosphere. Whether you prefer a mini dress or a flowing maxi dress, I think both work beautifully here.

One of my favorite memories from Amalfi actually had nothing to do with sightseeing.

My favourite moment: While walking through the streets, a woman sitting outside a restaurant stopped me just to ask where I had bought my puff-sleeve dress because she thought it was so beautiful.

Honestly, receiving a compliment like that while travelling in Italy, absolutely made my day!

What to Wear in Capri

For me, Capri has a completely different feel from the rest of the Amalfi Coast.

Everything about the island feels elegant, luxurious, and timeless—from the designer boutiques to the beautiful cafés and perfectly maintained streets.

Because of that, I wanted my outfit to reflect the atmosphere without feeling overdressed.

I chose a white two-piece set with tailored shorts and a matching vest finished with black trim. It felt sophisticated while still being comfortable enough for exploring the island all day.

Personally, I think Capri is the perfect place for clean lines, neutral colors, linen fabrics, and classic accessories.

Of course, you don’t need to dress up to enjoy Capri. This is simply the style I enjoy wearing, especially in destinations that have such an elegant atmosphere.

If I were choosing outfits again, I’d still avoid very sporty looks here and instead opt for timeless pieces that complement the island’s sophisticated vibe.

The Best Shoes for the Amalfi Coast

If there’s one thing I would never compromise on, it’s comfortable shoes.

No matter which town you visit, you’ll probably spend far more time walking than you expect.

For my trip, flat sandals and ballet flats worked perfectly.

The only mistake I made was assuming my favorite sandals would stay comfortable all day. Even though I’d worn them before, walking for hours eventually caused them to rub my feet.

That’s something I’d definitely keep in mind for future trips.

I would avoid high heels almost completely, especially in Positano. Between the steep staircases, uneven streets, and cobblestones, they’re simply not practical for sightseeing.

What to Wear on the Ferry

Since we travelled almost everywhere by ferry, this quickly became something I hadn’t thought much about before the trip.

Even on warm days, it can feel noticeably windier once you’re out on the water, especially if you’re sitting outside on the upper deck.

I’d recommend bringing a lightweight cardigan, linen shirt, or thin blazer that you can easily throw over your outfit if needed.

It’s also worth wearing sunglasses because the sunlight reflecting off the sea can be surprisingly bright.

What to Wear on an Amalfi Coast Boat Tour

During our trip to Capri, we also joined a one-hour boat tour around the island.

For that excursion, I changed out of my white two-piece outfit into a simple black one-piece swimsuit paired with a long black beach cover-up.

It still matched the elegant atmosphere I wanted while being much more practical for spending time on the boat.

I also wore sunglasses, but decided to skip wearing my hat since the boat picked up speed quite often and I didn’t want it blowing away.

If you’re planning a boat tour, I’d definitely recommend choosing comfortable swimwear with a lightweight cover-up that still makes you feel confident when taking photos.

What Colours Look Best on the Amalfi Coast?

In my opinion, soft, timeless colors photograph beautifully on the Amalfi Coast.

My personal favorites are:

  • Butter yellow
  • White
  • Beige
  • Soft blue
  • Blush pink
  • Black
  • Brown

I also think linen fabrics, delicate floral prints, puff sleeves, and romantic silhouettes fit naturally with the Mediterranean scenery.

Rather than following short-lived trends, I preferred choosing outfits that I’d still love looking back on years from now.

What to Wear on the Amalfi Coast in September

September turned out to be one of my favorite months to visit.

During the day, I was perfectly comfortable wearing dresses, sandals, and lightweight fabrics.

For the evenings, though, I’d recommend packing one extra layer.

A lightweight blazer, cardigan, or linen shirt can make a big difference once the sun goes down, especially if you’re spending time near the sea or taking an evening ferry.

I’d also consider swapping sandals for ballet flats or loafers if you’re planning to stay out later.

Outfit Mistakes to Avoid on the Amalfi Coast

Looking back, these are the mistakes I’d avoid:

  • Wearing brand-new shoes for long sightseeing days.
  • Choosing high heels for Positano’s staircases and cobblestone streets.
  • Packing uncomfortable outfits that restrict movement.
  • Carrying very large handbags all day.
  • Wearing overly sporty outfits if you’re hoping for elegant travel photos.

Most importantly, wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you wear jeans on the Amalfi Coast?

Yes, you can. However, during my September trip, I found lightweight dresses, linen outfits, and breathable fabrics much more comfortable for sightseeing. If you plan to wear jeans, I’d save them for cooler evenings rather than daytime exploring.

Do you need to dress up for restaurants on the Amalfi Coast?

Not necessarily. Most restaurants don’t have a strict dress code, so smart casual outfits are perfectly appropriate. Personally, I enjoyed dressing up a little because it matched the elegant atmosphere of places like Positano and Capri, but it’s completely optional.

Are designer clothes expected on the Amalfi Coast?

Not at all. While you’ll certainly spot luxury fashion in places like Capri, you don’t need designer labels to fit in. A timeless, well-styled outfit can look just as elegant.

How many outfits do I need for a 5-day Amalfi Coast trip?

For my five-day trip, I planned one main outfit for each day, plus a swimsuit, a beach cover-up, and one lightweight layer for cooler evenings and ferry rides. Planning my outfits in advance also made packing much easier.

Is the Amalfi Coast more casual or dressy?

I’d describe the overall style as casual chic. During the day, most people wear relaxed summer clothes, while evenings tend to feel a little more polished—especially in places like Positano and Capri.
